French is a great language, but sometimes it is difficult to learn. There are words with a strange spelling or words which a confusion pronunciation. But if you want to use a language to write texts or to talk to other persons, you will need verbs.
You could start with this list, but also attend a language school to learn French wherever you want.
The most common verbs in French
1) être – “to be”
- je suis : I am
- tu es : you are
- il / elle / on est : he / she is
- nous sommes : we are
- vous êtes : you are
- ils / elles sont : they are
Example: Je suis à Londres. – I am in London.
2) avoir – “to have”
- j’ai : I have
- tu as : you have
- il / elle / on a : he / she has
- nous avons : we have
- vous avez : you have
- ils / elles ont : they have
Example: Elle a deux enfants. – She has two kids.
3) pouvoir – “to be able”
- je peux : I am able
- tu peux : you are able
- il / elle / on peut : he / she is able
- nous pouvons : we are able
- vous pouvez : you are able
- ils / elles peuvent : they are able
Example: Ils peuvent jouer aujourd’hui. – They are able to play today.
4) voir – “to see”
- je vois : I see
- tu vois : you see
- il / elle / on voit : he / she sees
- nous voyons : we see
- vous voyez : you see
- ils / elles voient : they see
Example: Nous voyons Anna. – We see Anna.
5) demander – “to ask”
- je demande : I ask
- tu demandes : you ask
- il / elle / on demande : he / she asks
- nous demandons : we ask
- vous demandez : you ask
- ils / elles demandent : they ask
Example: Tu demandes la même question. – You ask the same question.
6) savoir – “to know”
- je sais : I know
- tu sais : you know
- il / elle / on sait : he / she knows
- nous savons : we know
- vous savez : you know
- ils / elles savent : they know
Example: Je sais la réponse. – I know the answer.
7) mettre – “to place, to put”
- je mets : I place, I put
- tu mets : you place, you put
- il / elle / on met : he / she places, he / she puts
- nous mettons : we place, we put
- vous mettez : you place, you put
- ils / elles mettent : they place, they put
Example: Je mets un vase sur la table. – I put a vase on the table.
8) comprendre – “to understand”
- je comprends : I understand
- tu comprends : you understand
- il / elle / on comprend : he / she understands
- nous comprenons : we understand
- vous comprenez : you understand
- ils / elles comprennent : they understand
Example: Est-ce que tu comprends le texte? – Do you understand the text?
9) faire – “to make, to do”
- je fais : I make, I do
- tu fais : you make, you do
- il / elle / on fait : he / she makes, he / she does
- nous faisons : we make, we do
- vous faites : you make, you do
- ils / elles font : they make, they do
Example: Il fait ses devoirs. – He does his homework.
10) aller – “to go”
- je vais : I go
- tu vais : you go
- il / elle / on va : he / she goes
- nous allons : we go
- vous allez : you go
- ils / elles vont : they go
Example: Vous allez à l’école. – You go to school.
11) parler – “to talk, to speak”
- je parle : I talk, I speak
- tu parles : you talk, you speak
- il / elle / on parle : he / she talks, he / she speaks
- nous parlons : we talk, we speak
- vous parlez : you talk, you speak
- ils / elles parlent : they talk, they speak
Example: Je parle anglais. – I speak English.
12) vouloir – “to want”
- je veux : I want
- tu veux : you want
- il / elle / on veut : he / she wants
- nous voulons : we want
- vous voulez : you want
- ils / elles veulent : they want
Example: Elle veut un chien. – She wants a dog.
