Goals for language learners

Goals for language learners

Every person needs goals to make progress and to learn a language faster. Without goals it is not possible to organise all the things you have to learn to speak a language fluently.

So what are goals?

Goals could make your learning process easier. It will be easier to learn regularly and to really use the time you have. And the best thing about goals: You could celebrate when you have reached one.

Why do you need goals?

The first thing why goals are important is that you can check your progess in an easy way. In addition they could be a motivation and they could show you what it really means to reach a goal.

Nevertheless you are the boss. That means that it is your decision which goals are yours. It doesn’t matter if they are big or small. The most important thing is that they help you to organise your learning process.

Goals for language learners – the right way

It is better to formulate every goal clearly. That means that the goals should be very detailed.

Here is an exemple:

1) I want to speak French.
2) In three months I want to speak French. That means that I want to have a small conversation with a friend, to ask the way on the street and to read short articles in a newspaper.

Where is the difference?

In the first possibility it is not very clearly formulated. It doesn’t tell the level, so it is not explicit if you want to order something in a restaurant or if you want to discuss about specific topics. In the second possibility it is very clear what you want to know in French in a specific space of time (here: three months).

So be careful and include also the “what” and the “when” in your goals to have them clearly fomulated.

Of course there could be sometimes changes because you are ill or you have to work a lot. But to manage also these changings, there is a simple way: Check your goals every week to adapt them to your life.

It is better to change the goals than to forget them.

And after writing your goals down?

Your goals should always be a fixed part in your learning process. That means that you should have your goals in mind or on a poster where you can see them every day.

Because goals aren’t only words, goals can be also pictures, music or drawings. Be creative and create something to have your goals in mind.
But the most important thing is:

The goal of today is not necessarily the goal of tomorrow.

Be open to changes and learn a language with fun (for example in one of our language schools).
